MORE ENTERTAINING JUNK IN TEXAS - CADILLAC RANCH NEAR AMARILLO
Usually Associated Press (AP) reporters bang out around 8 stories an day (or so I've been told) wasting no time or effort on non-essential details. But every now and then, an AP reporter gets to write a feature-ish article. Any boy-o are they fun.
Take this story about a pair of brothers from the Houston surrounds of Texas who want to turn a used-up sand pit into a 50 acre Scuba Park. READ: a lake filled with tonnes of interesting junk, like a NASA spacecraft, old fire engines, a church steeple and a Navy F-5 fighter jet. It's also worth noting that in 2003 diggers in the pit unearthed the bones of a not-so-woolly mammoth. So maybe there's more fossils in store for the really adventurous diver.
It's cute read. But here's what I want to know...did anyone else realise that Scuba Parks were like a thing? Supposedly there's another big one in Texas and one in Pennsylvania. I can't help but wonder why you'd go to a giant man-made lake filled with trash, versus the actual ocean. I guess if you don't live near a coast, this could be a good option. But I still hope they fill the lakes with interesting fauna - snapping turtles perhaps?

The idea of the scuba park seems strange. While in Barbados I debated with many scuba-divers from places not near water about the rewards of getting certified. Everyone told me it was worth the money because "you can see much more" while diving than you can while snorkeling. But to me, it just seems to be overkill.
First of all, if you have a pit with lots of interesting junk - why flood it? It's easier for people to look at it while on foot. Second of all, why scuba? Why not just swim around with a snorkel? Snorkeling is cheaper, easier to learn, and you probably will get a bit more exercise, something all North Americans seem to need. It all just seems so silly.
I like the picture of the cars in the sand though, that's cool!

Scuba diving is totally unique. Snorkeling if fun but you just don't get the same view of the ocean or the same sense of weightlessness. Learning to scuba is expensive but I found it absolutely magic and totally worth it. You really feel like a fish. It feels like flying. I would recommend it without hesitation....
