Hybrid burgers!
"What's the secret of the DoubleMeat Palace? It's a meat process."
Ahhh, when the reality is inspired by science fiction. Turns out this super-soy company called Solae is attempting to create a "hybrid burger" that is part soy and part beef - all the taste but half the saturated fat. Bonus!
No matter how amusing this veggie/beef burger, my first reaction was, "why not just buy 95% fat-free ground beef?" I remember the first time I saw on a ground beef package that "normal" was around 20% fat, "lean" was 12% and extra lean around 5%. And I'm all..DUDE! (that's a difference of about 6 grams of saturated fat per burger). I've never bought anything but extra lean ever again. OF course the makers of frozen burgers aren't going to make the same choice for me. Fatty ground beef is cheaper and, well, duh.
Of course soy protein has benefits on top of just being damn low in all fats. Soy protein seems to lower cholesterol, reducing risk of heart disease. How nice. But I still think I was my veggie and beef burger separate.

I'm guessing that someone is a Buffy the Vampire Slayer fan...

Speaking of Buff', grass-fed bison is much leaner. You can get it at Trader Joe's in the (Western?) U.S. or direct from the farmers online.

You know "hybrid" comes from the cars, just like "turbo" made it onto stereos and shampoos. I wonder if they conceived the marketing first and the product second.

Yeah. I was thinking that myself. What next? Hybrid t-shirts (half eco-lovin'hemp and half soil destroying cotton? Otherwise known as a BLEND).
But we can't get Buffalo on this range. Another thing to look forward to upon my return to North America...
And yes. Buffy fan. Heh heh.

I was at the trade show where they let people taste these products and they were really tasty. I was surprised. Plus they don't have to be a mixture of meat and soy. They were handing out vegetarian steak tips that looked and tasted exactly like meat but they were made from vegetable protein.
There were long lines at the booth. Pretty cool, actually, I thoughyt.

You know, I've gone down the tofurkey route. And tried those BBQ reconstituted tofu kabobs. And they just don't beat meat. I'll always buy those products once cause I'm curious and stupidly novelty seeking. But they never get my return custom.
As for food to which I will return to asap, my friend fed me burgers stuffed with stilton and rolled in cracked black pepper. They were a-mazing. Highly recommended.

I think the point of all this news coverage is that the hybrid burger isn't the same as those tofurkey and tofu kabobs. That's what makes it unique.
