So Slashdot - the internet's premier nerd forum - decided (as an April's fools prank) that they would try to appeal more to women readers. The "marketing department" estimated a 98.3% male bias. In addition to a new pink n' hearts design, they changed their usual catch phrase from "News for nerds. Stuff that Matters" to "OMG!!!! Ponies!!!!" CuteOverload, one of our favourite sites here at the circus, featured highly in Slashdot's story list, titled: "CUTEST WEBSITE EVER DISCOVERED." Other gems included: "OMG GOOGLE ROMANCE," "UNICORN T-SHIRTS!!!!LOL!!!," "GAMES: FORGET DRAGONS, TIME FOR PONIES!!" and my favourite "OMG BARBIE LINUX LOL!!!"
For a bunch of men whose closest contact with women comes via their Avatars, this was kind of funny. In a tragically obvious way.
But I have got to give the hands down to the folks at CuteOverload for their welcoming response to the all the Slashdotters, and homage to their new tagline. Cute ain't necessarily dumb (Thanks Will).
