Web study reflects gender crap..I mean GAP

Man_laptop Well my oh my. The tables are turning and women are finally, finally, bless their little hearts, catching up with men in terms of internet use. It was to be expected, I suppose, with them finally learning how to buy personal electronics and all. Fiddle-dee-dee, what a world we live in! Young women (18-29) are actually online MORE than men of the same age, according to the Pew Internet and American Life project's most recent report.

Now I could tell you how they found that men use the internet more for buying stuff, indulging in hobbies and checking news and sports scores. Or I could dwell on how women use the internet more for personal emails, finding directions and looking up health advice. But in the end, the genders are pretty much equal on how much they use the web, how many have broadband and blah blah blah. Read the full report if you are so concerned about it. It's money, not sex, that shapes trends in overall access. It's just that money and sex get so complicated.

And even though I realise that the above sentence sounded like an ending, I couldn't help but compile some of the headlines used by the major news outlets for this story. Because they are funny.

  • Male Domination of the Internet Is Over, Study Finds
  • Survey: Men and Women use Internet differently
  • Men log on for news; Women for views
  • Web study reflects gender gap
  • Even on Net, fewer men seek directions
  • Men want facts, women seek relations on web - survey
  • Men are from Google, Women are from Yahoo

What's your favourite? I like mine best.

(Thanks Peter!)

If women are online it's only because of PC envy.

Even on Net, fewer men seek directions

Right...

Multimap is normally the first search extension I install everytime I get a new version of firefox. I virtually never buy stuff online, and spent most of my time talking to people and networking.

*shock horror*! According to this survey, I'm not a bloke. It must be the long hair, that's it.

I think the problem here is generalising. Again. Oh, and media looking for an easy headline. Yours is good BTW.

Oh no! Women have discovered the internet. Hide the pornography!

I remember the first time I google searched just my name "anna". The first thing that came up was porn. And then I tried it with all my lab-mates names. Porn, porn, porn, porn.

Talk about searching for directions...
