because it's Halloween today, a day where children all over the world will be GORGING THEMSELVES ON HEAPS AND BAGS AND TRUCKLOADS OF FREE CANDY, a day that dentists and parents fear, a day when more cavities are born than on any other single day, we have a bit of good news. by merely incorporating synthetic SPIT into candy, chocolate and chewing gum dentists may have developed a tooth-safe confectionary.
you see, saliva has all these compounds that act to reduce the acidity level in your mouth. bacteria breaks down sugars into evil acids that can erode teeth. that is why chewing gum helps to fight cavities, just because it makes you salivate. so why not make candy with a little extra drool built right in???? this kills me, i love it. from the press release put out by Stony Brook University in New York State:
"CaviStat can be considered to be a super-saliva complex that picks up where fluoride has left off," said Dr. Israel Kleinberg, the lead researcher and Founding Chair of the Department of Oral Biology and Pathology. "By mimicking the profound benefits of saliva we are able to attack all stages of the tooth decay process at the same time."
the researchers found that CaviStat worked better than fluoride at protecting kids from cavities. which begs to question to me...why hasn't anyone put fluoride drops in my Trident? maybe it's a flavour combination thing.
read the press release or better yet, wait until tomorrow when all those delicious bags of hallowe'en candy will be half price and just stock up. SWEET!

Glorious, dribbling comfort.
